Strong hitting gets attention, but elite defense wins games — especially at the youth and travel baseball levels in Myrtle Beach and across the Carolinas.
At Big Game Performance, we spend just as much time building rock-solid fielding and throwing fundamentals as we do on hitting. Former pro Alex Buccilli and our coaches know that clean defense and accurate throws separate good players from the ones who make travel teams like the Ironbacks and Team Elite Platinum.
Here are the essential fielding and throwing fundamentals every young player (ages 8–14) needs to master.
1.Proper Glove Work and Hand Positioning
The foundation of great defense starts with how a player uses their glove.
Key points to focus on:
- Keep the glove out in front with palms up for ground balls
- Use two hands whenever possible (glove and throwing hand together)
- Create a “funnel” by bringing the ball into the center of the body quickly
Many young players reach or stab at the ball. We teach them to stay low, present a big target, and secure the ball cleanly before thinking about the throw.
2. Footwork for Ground Balls
Good footwork turns average fielders into reliable defenders.
Teach your player to:
- Approach the ball with quick, short steps (not long strides)
- Get their body in front of the ball whenever possible
- Field the ball on the glove-side foot for better momentum toward the target
At our indoor facility, we drill this repeatedly on turf so players build muscle memory without worrying about bad hops on wet grass.
3. Throwing Mechanics from the Ground Up
Accurate, strong throws start with the lower body.
Fundamentals we emphasize in every session:
- Step toward the target with the glove-side foot
- Rotate the hips and shoulders in sequence
- Keep the elbow high and throw “over the top” (not sidearm for most plays)
- Follow through toward the target with the throwing arm
We break throwing down into slow-motion drills so players can feel the correct arm path and body sequencing.
4. The Crow Hop and Momentum Throws
For longer throws (outfield to infield or across the diamond), the crow hop is a game-changer.
How to do it:
- Catch the ball with momentum moving forward
- Hop on the back foot and land on the front foot while crow-hopping toward the target
- Use the lower half to generate power instead of just arm strength
This technique helps young players make stronger, more accurate throws without injuring their arms.
5. Backhand Plays and Difficult Angles
Every player will face tough hops and backhand opportunities.
We teach:
- Staying low and moving feet quickly to get into position
- Using the backhand glove with the palm facing up
- Quickly transferring the ball to the throwing hand and making a strong throw
These plays build confidence and prevent extra bases for the other team.
6. Cutoffs, Relays, and Communication
Defense is a team effort. Young players need to understand:
- Proper cutoff positions and who covers what base
- Loud, clear communication (“Cut!” or “Relay!”)
- Backing up throws and staying alert on every play
We practice these game situations in our small-group sessions so players develop baseball IQ along with physical skills.
How to Practice These Fundamentals at Home or at Big Game Performance
Parents can help by:
- Using soft toss or short-distance ground ball practice in the yard
- Focusing on one fundamental per session (don’t overload)
- Using a mirror or phone video to check form
For faster progress, nothing beats structured coaching. In our indoor facility near Conway/Myrtle Beach, we use video analysis, repetitive drills, and game-speed scenarios to lock in these fundamentals quickly.
Why These Skills Matter for Travel Baseball
Coaches at the travel level (including our Ironbacks and Team Elite Platinum teams) look for players who can be trusted in the field. A player with clean hands, accurate throws, and good instincts gets on the field more often and helps the team win.
The good news? These fundamentals are teachable at any age when practiced correctly.
